Kyna’s approach to the Chicago Board of Education is informed by nearly a decade of experience with Chicago Public Schools, her work in Special Education, and her experience as a disability advocate and community leader.
Every student deserves to feel supported and included.
As a former Special Education teacher, Kyna understands that students thrive when they feel seen. She believes that when teachers are supported, students thrive, and when students thrive, families are stronger, neighborhoods are more connected, and entire communities can succeed. When schools and educators understand their students’ needs and take the time to build strong, supportive relationships with students, families, and communities, they create the conditions in which students feel comfortable and excited to learn. Kyna wants to create accessible, safe learning environments where students of every ability and background have the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
CPS resources should reach and benefit the students and schools that need them most.
Kyna believes school funding should be transparent, responsible, and focused on students and their classrooms. When resources fail to reach classrooms, it’s the students who pay the price. Kyna wants to ensure CPS resources are reaching the schools where they are needed most and being used to support classrooms, invest in educators, and provide students with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. For Kyna, passing a responsible budget means looking closely at where CPS dollars are going and whether those investments are benefiting students.
CPS schools should remain safe and welcoming for every student and family.
Kyna believes every CPS student, educator, and staff member deserves to feel safe and welcome at school. She wants CPS to remain focused on protecting students, supporting educators, and maintaining welcoming learning environments for all families.
As a Board member, Kyna states that she would support the District’s existing protections for students and families and oppose efforts she believes would threaten those protections or divide school communities.
